Mystical villages famous for their fire dancing, hidden in the mountain of Strandzha, sit nearby the Black Sea coast. The fire dancers or nestinari, gather each year and dance barefoot on glowing embers carrying the icon of St. Constantine and St. Elena, the saints who found the cross of Jesus.
But long before the nestinarian rituals became a tourist attraction, women from the region were weaving blankets with crosses and circles. The intriguing part of the story is that the crosses with circles seem to come from a time long before Christ was born. A similar cross with circular holes from 4500 BC was found in the opposite corner of Bulgaria. Maybe it was an amulet, maybe it was a fertility or a solar symbol…
We can only guess the meaning of these symbols, but we created this design to bring in your home beauty by continuing a forgotten old tradition.
